The Laguna Playhouse, one of the oldest continuously operating theaters west of the Mississippi, celebrated 95 years with its annual fundraising gala Nov. 14. More than 300 attendees filled the Island Hotel in Newport Beach for an evening of auctions, fine dining, live entertainment and dancing. The night began with drinks and hors d’oeuvres as guests placed silent auction bids. Next, live music greeted everyone as they moved into the elegantly decorated dining area for a sit-down meal, professional dance performance and live auction. Items up for bid included elegant jewelry as well as experiences such as a walk-on role in a Laguna Playhouse production. Co-chaired by Melinda Masson and Barbara MacGillivray, the event raised a record $350,000, which will help cover the iconic theater’s operating costs. In addition to its entertainment offerings, Laguna Playhouse provides educational opportunities for children and adults, and aims to inspire the community with experiences that stimulate cultural and social interaction.
