Celebrating the Ables

On Oct. 16, a gathering was held to celebrate the Abel family, a Laguna legacy spanning four generations. Seventy-five guests turned out for the tribute, held at the beautiful Arch Beach home of Paola Porrini-Bisson. Family and close friends enjoyed Danish hors d’oeuvres and libations. The master of ceremonies was Greg Abel, a well-known architect whose talent is evident in many fine homes and establishments. Greg’s grandfather, Carl “Pop” Abel came to Laguna in 1937 from Denmark and was an antiques dealer, wood carver and designer of a few unique Laguna homes. Two sons followed, Mogens Abel, a gifted wood carver and Chris Abel, a key architect in our city. Greg started as an apprentice to his father, Chris, at age 14 and immersed himself in design and construction. His children are also gifted: Daughter Lea is an accomplished artist and son Tristan works in the family firm. Creative examples from all four generations were on display. One of the most impressive items was an intricately carved Asian motif door, first started by Chris, then worked on later by Greg and ultimately completed by Tristan. The event was topped off by a heartfelt speech by Greg about this family’s amazing legacy. —Andy Hedden
